4. Castillo de Colomares, an essential
Colomares was built by Dr. Esteban Martín and two masons from Malaga between 1987 and 1994 in a completely traditional way and with techniques typical of the Middle Ages. It intended to document and relate to its visitors how the conquest of America has conceived and all the events that led Christopher Columbus to present to the Catholic Monarchs his plan to travel west to reach the Indies.
The construction of the castle lasted 7 years and they used brick, stone, cement, concrete, and wood. Thanks to his knowledge of art, history, and architecture, Dr. Martín was able to shape that work, turning it into an icon for the way of narrating the conquest of America.
We recommend you visit the Castillo de Colomares first thing in the morning, especially during the summer season, since after 5 pm most tourists visit the area.
5. Stupa of Enlightenment
Last but not least, we recommend you visit the Enlightenment Stupa, where you will be surprised by a Buddhist monument built in 2003.
This stupa is the largest in the West, with a height of 33 meters and a base of 25 meters long and 25 meters wide. It is located in the middle of Avenida de Retamar, where you will find a wonderful museum and incredible panoramic views. Its opening hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. It is a spectacular space that you must visit.
